Everything you need to know about the 2026 Shradh Paksha — when it falls, why it is observed, the tithi calendar, and how to book a verified Vedic pandit for Pind Daan, Tarpan & Shradh.
What is Pitru Paksha 2026? (Quick Answer)
Pitru Paksha 2026 begins on 26 September 2026 and ends on 10 October 2026, concluding with Sarva Pitru Amavasya (Mahalaya Amavasya). It is a 15–16 day Hindu lunar fortnight dedicated to honouring deceased ancestors through Shradh, Tarpan and Pind Daan. Hindus believe ancestors descend to earth during this period to accept offerings from their descendants, and performing these rituals — ideally at Gaya, Kashi or Prayagraj — brings them peace and frees the family from Pitru Dosha.
Also called Shradh Paksha or Mahalaya Paksha, this period falls in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, in the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) right after the Ganesh Chaturthi season. It is considered one of the most spiritually significant 16 days of the entire Hindu calendar.

Why is Pitru Paksha Observed? The Motive Behind It
According to Hindu Dharma, every individual carries three debts (Rin) at birth — Dev Rin (debt to the gods), Rishi Rin (debt to the sages), and Pitru Rin (debt to one's ancestors). Pitru Paksha exists to repay this last debt. Hindu scripture also recounts the story of Karna from the Mahabharata: after death he was offered gold instead of food in the afterlife, because in life he had donated wealth generously but never offered food and water to his own ancestors. He was sent back to earth for sixteen days to correct this — and that sixteen-day window became Pitru Paksha.
The core motive is threefold:
- Liberation (Moksha): Offerings of Pind Daan and Tarpan are believed to free ancestral souls from any lingering attachment to the earthly plane.
- Removing Pitru Dosha: Unfulfilled ancestral rites are believed to cause Pitru Dosha — obstacles in marriage, career, health and family peace. Shradh during this fortnight helps dissolve it.
- Family harmony & gratitude: The rituals are a structured way to remember one's lineage, express gratitude, and keep the bond between generations alive.
Shradh, Tarpan & Pind Daan — What's the Difference?
Tarpan
Daily offering of water mixed with black sesame seeds (til), barley and kusha grass to ancestors, performed after a morning bath while reciting their names.
Pind Daan
Offering of rice or barley balls (pindas) to ancestors — considered the most powerful ritual for granting the soul peace and liberation from worldly attachment.
Shradh Vidhi
The complete ceremony performed on the ancestor's exact death tithi — sankalp, mantra chanting, offerings, and feeding Brahmins — guided by a qualified pandit.

Pitru Paksha 2026 begins on 26 September 2026 with Purnima Shradh and ends on 10 October 2026, observed as Sarva Pitru Amavasya. Timings can shift by a day per regional Panchang — confirm with our pandit before travel.
It repays Pitru Rin — the debt owed to ancestors — through Shradh, Tarpan and Pind Daan, believed to grant ancestors peace and remove Pitru Dosha from the family.
10 October 2026 — the final and most important day, when Shradh can be performed for all ancestors, including those whose exact death tithi is unknown.
Gaya's Vishnupad Temple is most sacred for Pind Daan, Kashi for Shradh & Tarpan at the ghats, and Prayagraj's Triveni Sangam for Tarpan. Many devotees combine all three.
Tarpan is the daily water-and-sesame offering; Pind Daan is the offering of rice/barley pindas for liberation; Shradh is the full ceremony performed on the death tithi.
Basic Tarpan can be done at home, but Pind Daan and full Shradh Vidhi are most effective at Gaya, Kashi or Prayagraj. We also offer proxy/guided rituals for those who can't travel.
