Kashi
Varanasi, also known as Kashi or Banaras, stands as one of India’s oldest and holiest cities, regardless of the name you use. Devout Indians aspire to undertake the Kashi Yatra—a pilgrimage to this sacred place—at least once in their lifetime. Kashi holds spiritual and historical allure, where rituals are conducted to honor departed souls. Traditionally, these rituals take place along riverbanks, with the Ganges being the most revered. Performing these rites on the banks of the Ganges in Kashi carries profound significance.
Kashi is not only a place of salvation but also liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Having endured life’s hardships, few wish to be reborn repeatedly. In ancient times, elderly individuals embarked on the Kashi Yatra, walking all the way to Kashi from their homes, seeking salvation through their final moments there. Most never returned to their places of origin.
The primary purpose of this pilgrimage is to perform rituals and visit temples such as Viswanath, Visalakshi, and Annapoorni. With numerous temples, Kashi is rightly called the City of Temples. Immersing in the Ganges and participating in the Triveni Sangam, along with prayers at Viswanath and Visalakshi Temples, purifies our souls and paves the way for Moksha. Notably, the Ganga Pooja remains a daily highlight in Kashi.”
